The workshop will allow attendants to learn how to approach designing for complex social systems. The course will focus on using design methods for framing the problem in a new way and helping unveil new potential approaches, with particular emphasis on how to conduct design research and ideation involving key stakeholders and how to facilitate the community to designing their own solutions through a Living Lab approach.

Denis Weil was most recently the Vice President, Concept + Design, at McDonald’s Corporation, responsible for the development of next generation customer experience and retailing concepts. Denis is now focused on applying his experience of discovering and scaling new experience and service innovations to the social sector. He consults with different community based organizations and teaches Design for Social Innovation at the Institute of Design in Chicago and the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Israel. His viewpoints about the value of design for innovation have been published in ID magazine and Business Week. He was named a 2010 Master of Design by Fast Company. A native of Switzerland, Denis received his MDes in design planning from the Institute of Design and an MSc in Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland.
