Description

When people lack the skills to assess sources of information, disinformation efforts can have outsized impact on society. People now depend increasingly on information ‘shared’ by their friends on social networks, so it is critical to understand how to discern fact from propaganda. In our work with library systems, IREX has developed new tools to help people better interpret the kind of information they encounter in the social media-dominated information space.

Ari Katz and Mehri Druckman of IREX will conduct several interactive sessions from the Learn to Discern course, giving participants insight into how to apply it in their own libraries and communities. Participants analyze their own media space, how much media and why they consume it, and where they might have blind spots. We cover practical skills that can be applied to avert disinformation. By the end of the session, participants will be equipped with a new and highly relevant service that they can offer through their libraries.
