Community development by nature requires interaction and engagement with the communities, either individual members or groups of people; it also brings changes and improvements not only into communities, but also into public libraries. So it is rather about re-imagination library work and collaborative innovations.
The topic of community development is also relevant to both industrialized and developing countries.
The main focus of this session is contribution of public libraries’ to the development of communities. We invite you to think about and discuss online:
What is the right focus for public library in the community?
What are main reasons behind the drive of some communities to protect their libraries at the risk of closure, while others stay inactive; or why today some communities fight for opening a new library, where there was none before?
Why contribution and role of public libraries to the community well-being is often unrecognized or even questioned by authorities and some members of the society?
What factors and conditions allow libraries to achieve the recognition for its roles in betterment of community?
Please share your thoughts and ideas, tell your real stories of success or mistakes, ask questions and propose issues to be discussed at the conference in Aarhus.

Thanks to all participants of this session. I think the discussions went well, and do not forget sometimes to try again re-thinking library, starting first from the needs and community profile as, if there was never library before.
