I guess traditional library skills are not of help, if public libraries takes a step to initiate, run or join community development program. In your opinion, what competences and skills are most important to be successful?

To sparkle a discussion above are a cloud of future librarians tasks/skills - a result of an international group discussion at Peer Learning Meeting a few weeks ago. What thoughts and emotions it evokes and wether it resonates with your thinking of the future.

In my opinion non-profit marketing and soft management skills are very important. Very important are communication skills in order to establish partnership network with other institutions, NGOs, authorities and individuals in community. Team work is also very important.

All mentioned skills and tasks suit to my view of the public librarians future - flexibility, learning and relationship building on the first place.

Hello Ramune,

hello to everyone.

Puff ... i am looking at the cloud above and i am wondered and at the same time a little scared. ... Sooooo much definition ... :)

I completely agree with Dijana. All of mentioned skills (or competitions) are and will be very important in a future. I also would highlight  the word "adaptable" from this cloud. I think  librarians (and Libraries) should be able to follow the rapidly and constantly changing environment and to handle changes. Plus good IT skills and Keeping up with new technology as well.

And i am not sure that traditional library skills are not of help in context "community" or "community development and libraries". I would say traditional skills are still in demand but they have to be expanded. :)
