The future of libraries will increasingly depend on the ability of librarians to actively engage with their community and provide services that connect them to information resources that will exist, not just in books, but in a variety of places and formats – such as open government data, online courses, or community-generated content. Libraries will need to function as places where people can connect to those resources and engage in ways that meet their individual goals.
Participatory methodologies, including design thinking, are formal practices to engage a broad constituency to uncover local needs and assets, then design, test, build, and evaluate programs. This methodology will be a key part of building the dynamic and engaging library of the future.
This session will serve as an introduction to using participatory methodologies in public libraries, and will provide hands-on experience in using methodologies that are currently being used in Brazilian public and community libraries. This session will be run as an interactive workshop drawing on the experiences of the five panelists; key participatory methodologies and techniques will be modeled in the session, leaving participants with resources to support their continued exploration and use of these methodologies in their libraries. The work will be very focused on techniques and practices they can bring to their own libraries, as well as specific opportunities for them to use participatory methodologies to engage their broader communities and influence program design. The panelists from IPR and Caravan will provide key overviews and techniques of participatory methodologies, as they’ve been put into practice in Brazilian libraries. The state coordinator will provide practical feedback on how these practices have worked in specific libraries and how they have influenced library programming.

Dear Daniela,
Participatory methodology was something new for me, and I've learned a lot. Right now me and my colleagues are working on project for new branch library in Ljubljana and I will try to include local people and institutions by using participatory methodology.
Thank you for your session, it was a great experience.
Regards,
Barbara Marinčič

Dear friends,
We, from Instituto de Políticas Relacionais in Brazil, would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for attending our Listening to Create session (www.nextlibrary.net/group/2017-listening-to-create) and for being with us at the 2017 Next Library.
The practices presented at the workshop were a partnership between librarian Cleide Fernardes, from Minas Gerais’ State Secretary of Culture, Caravan Studios, from San Francisco (CA) and Instituto de Políticas Relacionais. We all believe participatory methodology is the best tool to engage communities, map-out social issues and find viable and creative solutions.
We had already worked with Cleide at Belo Horizonte’s public library and with Caravan Studios on the “Made at the Library” project (http://www.feitonabiblioteca.org/english) that used app technology to connect people and solve local problems.
In that sense, our organization, developed project Tô na Rede: an initiative that aims to engage libraries and their local communities through the use of participatory methodology and Information and Communication Technologies, so they are able to meet the communities’ information demands and became a place of encounters. Have a look at our presentational video: https://youtu.be/S86flau3zc4
It was a great pleasure to be able to share our experience with you all. Your presence was paramount for the success of the workshop and meeting you made our journey richer and more especial.
Now we want to keep this conversation going! So, please, send us your feedback, follow us on facebook (facebook.com.br/relacionais), twitter (twitter.com.br/relacionais) and check out our website (relacionais.org.br).
See you soon!
