I want to suggest to organize a session on Information Literacy, which these days becoming a vital concept, promoting by our Library staff members among users.

Being information-literate has been defined as “having the ability to recognize when information is needed, then to be able to locate and evaluate the appropriate information and use it effectively” (American Library Association, 1989)

Information literacy linked with both information practices and critical thinking in the information and communication technology environment. Not only is information literacy central to achieving personal empowerment and economic development, it is pivotal to the pursuit of lifelong learning. It is also closely relates  to concepts of information skills and information technology literacy.

Information literacy has gradually become a strategic issue for academic institutions, where the emphasis is placed on teaching and learning strategies that deliver the skills needed by students to succeed in an increasingly competitive work environment, and libraries, first of all academic libraries, should now this concept and also actively promote it among users!

If given the opportunity, I will attend. it does not really depend on me. But one thing is certain. If I do attend it will be of tremendous assistance to my institution. I am a teacher by profession.

The idea of bringing together experienced world class library people and people from developing library communities is a wonderful one. This is especially so because in my country, Cameroon, the library is yet to really take off, even among the student community. I asked some of my students just a few minutes ago if they knew where the National library was and all thirty said no - to think that it is just about 5 minutes walk from where we are situated. As a matter of fact many Cameroonians would give the same response.

In the absence of trained librarians, teachers are sent to work in the libraries in schools in my country. I do not think this is a good idea. What do you think?
