The Play to STEM Continuum:  How Libraries and Museums can Help Build Sustainable STEM Connections

Experiment with us like the natural scientists children are as we dive into the ambiguity that neuroscientist, Beau Lotto states is at the heart of every STEM discipline.  Work & play in small and large groups as we conduct hands-on early childhood science experiments and play prompts developed in our Summer Learning Challenge.  Using the national-award winning STEM activities based on children’s literature and developed jointly by the Museum of Science and Industry & Chicago Public Library, we will be up and out of our seats, on the floor and using the room as we discover the habits of mind that both play and STEM learning rigorously require.  Set against the backdrop of the newly designed Chicago Public Library’s Central Children’s Room & the research behind the mission-driven redesign, which moves kids from spectator to participant,  everyone  will play, act and experiment as we use strategies that are proven to accelerate Play & STEM learning in museums and libraries.  Understanding the research about fostering creativity, we will use the room we are in to move throughout the space and use it to explore the concept of physical space as a learning laboratory.  We will also play a room-sized board game to illustrate ways in which sustainable partnerships such as CPL-MSI’s can be grown.
