2018 / Frogs, Redwoods, and Dandelions: Library Service Design and Ecomimicry

Description

In this playful session, Nate and Karen will use familiar natural ecosystems as a practical metaphor for planning service responses in complex environments. Small groups will examine three neighboring natural ecosystems: a woodland pond, a healthy forest, and a grassland. We will examine the unique individuals, species, communities, adaptations, and strategies that emerge in each ecosystem. Next, we will explore their interactive edges: the places where the pond, forest, and grassland communities meet one another. Finally, we will simulate what ecologists call a "disturbance regime"when a natural disaster like a chemical spill or a wildfire disrupts the balance of many adjacent ecosystems, and they are forced to adjust and recover. This session will feel like a 1970s elementary school science class got mashed up with your library’s last community needs assessment or strategic planning exercise.
