Democracy, Sustainable Development Goals & Play
The three themes of Next Library 2025 shape the experiences throughout the festival.
Democracy
As democratic values are increasingly under pressure, libraries can be more important than ever. We ask: Will the world be more or less democratic in 20 years — and what role will libraries play?
Libraries can be safe spaces for dialogue, trust, and inclusion. They can support voices that are often unheard, create civic engagement and community — across divides.
How do we stay relevant to everyone, especially those we disagree with? How do we maintain hope and action in a time of fear and apathy?
At Next Library, we’ll look at how libraries foster democratic dialogue, inclusion, and participation — both on the floor and beyond the walls.

Sustainable Development Goals
This year, we explore how a deeper connection between nature and culture can inspire more sustainable ways of living — and what role libraries play in this transition.
Can poetry, climate writing, or recycled literature spark change? What about skill sharing and practice — woodworking, sewing, gardening, cooking, walking? Or imaginative futures like solarpunk, scenario building, and dream labs? Maybe quiet approaches like forest bathing, breathwork, or bonfires?
We’re especially excited by formats that bring nature and culture together, whether indoor or outdoor, active or tranquil. Let’s explore planetary perspectives through both being and doing.

Play
Play isn’t just for kids. A playful mindset sparks creativity, strengthens learning, and supports well-being at all ages.
How can libraries tap into the power of play to engage people in new and surprising ways?
Expect to see playful learning, hands-on activities, and surprising formats that let participants explore the power of play in library spaces — and beyond.
